In my last post on research degrees, we explored master’s programmes considered research-focused. This post will consider postgraduate taught qualifications that might appeal not only to PAs but also to other Medical Associate Professionals (MAPs), healthcare professionals, and anyone interested in advancing their skills in health research. You may well be saying, “But I already have a master’s degree, why would I do another?” Well, you might, if the subject is especially new to you. And many of these courses offer PGCert and PGDip versions, so you don’t need to complete a full master’s degree to gain valuable skills and knowledge.
You might not want to take on a research degree but still want to become proficient in areas such as clinical audit or healthcare service evaluation. From public health and global health to data science, clinical education, and clinical audit and quality improvement, these programmes can help professionals across the healthcare sector enhance their careers and contribute to the improvement of healthcare practices.
The examples listed below are designed to provide both online and in-person options, but they are not definitive lists, and many other programmes are available depending on your specific needs and preferences.
Public Health and Global Health
Public health qualifications are ideal for those wanting to work on health at a population level, addressing issues such as disease prevention, health promotion, and healthcare policy. Global health adds an international dimension, helping healthcare professionals develop a broader perspective on healthcare challenges and how they intersect with public policy, infectious diseases, and healthcare delivery systems across the world.
Online: MPH in Public Health at Keele University. This fully online course covers topics like epidemiology, biostatistics, and global health. It's flexible for working professionals.

Online: MSc in Global Health at University of Edinburgh. This online programme offers a comprehensive understanding of global health challenges, focusing on international public health policies, global health inequalities, and disease management on a global scale.
Data Science and Health Informatics
As healthcare increasingly relies on data to drive decisions, data science and health informatics skills are in high demand. Professionals with training in these areas can contribute to better patient outcomes through data-driven insights, predictive models, and health informatics systems. Health informatics combines the collection and analysis of health data to improve patient care and organisational efficiency.
Online: PGCert in Applied Data Analysis at Birkbeck, University of London. This programme introduces the essential tools and techniques for analysing healthcare data, ideal for healthcare professionals looking to enhance their analytical skills.
In-Person: MSc Data Science at University of East Anglia. A more intensive course that provides deep technical knowledge in machine learning, big data analysis, and health informatics, perfect for those looking to lead in healthcare data innovation.
Online: MSc in Health Informatics at University of Manchester. This online programme covers key areas like electronic health records, data governance, and health information systems, designed for healthcare professionals seeking to apply informatics to improve clinical outcomes.
Clinical Education
For those interested in teaching the next generation of healthcare professionals, clinical education qualifications are invaluable. These programmes focus on educational theory, practical teaching skills, and curriculum design, preparing healthcare professionals to lead training programmes, mentor students, or design educational content. Many of these courses are accredited by professional bodies, such as the Academy of Medical Educators (AoME) or can lead to gaining Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), further enhancing your qualifications as an educator.
Online: PGCert/PGDip/MMedEd Medical Education at Newcastle University. This flexible programme is accredited by AoME and provides a path to achieving FHEA status. It covers educational theory, learning technologies, and assessment methods.
In-Person: MEd Education for Health Professionals at University of Birmingham. Accredited by AoME, this interactive course focuses on teaching in clinical settings, with modules on feedback, simulation-based learning, and modern educational practices.

Clinical Audit and Quality Improvement
For those interested in improving healthcare quality and patient outcomes, clinical audit and quality improvement (QI) are crucial skills. These processes involve systematically reviewing clinical practices, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing changes to enhance patient care. Courses in this area provide the tools needed to lead effective QI projects.

It’s designed for healthcare professionals seeking leadership roles in improving safety and quality within healthcare systems.
Health Economics
Health economics plays an essential role in healthcare decision-making by evaluating the costs and benefits of different health interventions. Courses in this area equip healthcare professionals with the tools to understand and influence healthcare resource allocation, public health policies, and economic evaluations.
Online: MSc in Health Economics at University of Sheffield. This online course provides a comprehensive foundation in economic theory and methods applied to healthcare, covering topics such as cost-effectiveness, healthcare financing, and resource allocation in health systems.
In-Person: MSc in Health Economics at London School of Economics (LSE). This programme offers in-depth knowledge in health economics, econometrics, and policy analysis, and is well-suited for those seeking advanced roles in healthcare finance and resource management.
Evidence-Based Medicine/Healthcare
Evidence-based medicine (EBM) is fundamental for ensuring clinical decisions and healthcare practices are grounded in the best available evidence. Courses in this area help healthcare professionals critically appraise the evidence to improve patient outcomes and healthcare delivery.
